What tools and services are available for working with PHI or restricted-access data?

Indiana University provides several secure, compliant resources to help researchers manage PHI and other restricted data:

  • RCRADaRS (Restricted Access Data Remote Server)Secure research enclave for analyzing sensitive datasets RC RADaRS (Restricted Access Data Remote Server) : A centrally managed, HIPAA-aligned environment designed for licensed or sensitive data that cannot be used on general-access systems. RADaRS supports secure statistical software, maintains strict authentication and audit controls, and reduces researcher burden by handling system updates and security patches.
  • RCResearch Database Complex (RDC)Supports MySQL and PostgreSQL databases & data-intensive applications RC Research Database Complex (RDC) : Offers secure, HIPAA-aligned MySQL and PostgreSQL databases for storing and analyzing PHI or structured restricted data. The RDC is centrally maintained and backed up regularly, giving researchers flexibility for data management while protecting sensitive information.
  • RCMicrosoft @ IU Secure StorageSecure storage option for institutional data RC Microsoft @ IU Secure Storage : Can be used to store Restricted and some Critical institutional data, including PHI.
  • Additional support: IU also provides secure file transfer tools (such as RCGlobusTransfer data between accounts on research supercomputers & research storage systems RC Globus ), guidance on using secure cloud storage, and consulting through RCSecureMyResearchFree resources & consulting to help researchers protect data RC SecureMyResearch to develop data protection plans, assess risks, and select compliant tools.
